A guide for Visitors

There are many beautiful walks around Penshurst. Glimpse our historical bluestone buildings and read their history. Climb Mt Rouse from base to the heights (or drive up and climb the stairs - the views are magnificent). Visit our delightful Botanic Gardens and relax in the gazebo by the lake, or have a barbeque while your children play on the playground.

The Newsagent & Takeaway are open 7.00am - 7pm. Stop for coffee and a meal, or grab the makings for lunch or dinner there, or at our Supermarket & Liquor store. On Friday and Saturday nights the Penshurst Hotel is open for dinner.

Drop into the Volcanoes Discovery Centre and collect a walking map and other tourist information about the region. The Centre itself is fascinating. Explore the history of the town and learn about the volcanoes across Western Victoria. Ours is not the only dormant one around. Have a private wander, or bring a group. The VDC opens seven days a week by appointment, and 10.00am - 2.00pm Thursday, 10.00am - 4.00pm Friday - Sunday, and can cater for up to 80 people at a time. Group bookings can include talks about the region and the creation of volcanoes, and a guided tour of Mt Rouse, to explain the geographical features. They cater to all ages and walks of life, from school groups, to vintage car adventurers and everyone in between.

Historical Penshurst begins at the Volcanoes Centre (the old Shire Offices) and continues into our Courthouse, which is open the 1st Saturday of each month 9.30 - 12.30. Detailed and indepth records of the region are available by contacting the Mt Rouse & District Historical Society.

For those who love nature, the Yatmerone Wildlife Reserve on the outskirts of town. Take a camera and enjoy the peace and quiet watching the birds and animals thrive in their natural environment.

Accommodation includes two beautiful Bed & Breakfasts and our caravan park. Bring your caravan, park in our Gardens and enjoy your stay as you explore Penshurst and the Volcanic region of Victoria.
